Why We Started Beast Code
Beast Code CEO Matt Zimmermann reflects on how seven engineers around a foldout table built a defense technology company obsessed with solving meaningful problems.

We didn't start Beast Code with a master plan. We didn't have deep expertise in data aggregation. Truth be told, we barely understood the full scope of the Department of Defense and their challenges.
At the time, we were seven engineers working at a local defense contractor tired of the daily grind. Bureaucratic processes and unnecessary excess were the status quo. We saw problems that needed to be solved, yet they were met with red tape and a lack of motivation. Our customers needed more. Something that kept pace with today's need and solved tomorrow's battles. They needed a trusted partner to join them through thick and thin. We weren't thinking about profits, losses, or margins. We were obsessed with solving meaningful problems. The kind everyone else said couldn't be done. To saying yes, when everyone else said it was impossible.
While others waited, we acted. We took risks and shot for the moon. From day one, we imagined a different kind of defense company. One where people were celebrated for thinking bold, relentless execution, and an unwavering belief in impact over process. And so…Beast Code was born!
The early days were a blur of travel, user discussions, prototyping demos, and long nights. We showed up in person. We actively listened. We learned their problems and embodied them as if they were our own. And we delivered. Not once, but again and again. We continuously put solutions in the hands of people.
Our products weren't perfect. Sometimes they weren't even finished. We constantly adapted and responded to user feedback in real-time. And our contracts mirrored our ethos; small, fast, iterative engagements that built trust piece by piece. We didn't see our customers as just a line item on a contract. We saw them as partners. And they saw how deeply we cared about helping them achieve their mission.
There were tough times. We had long stints where it felt like nothing was working. But not many people can say they're helping to shape the future of naval warfare or launch rockets into space. Everyone working at Beast Code is contributing to solving some of our nation's most complex defense challenges. The things you do everyday matter. And because of that, even on the hardest days, working at Beast Code has always been exciting and impactful.
A partner once told us, "Beast Code can do anything until proven otherwise." That statement has stuck with us. It's become a cultural cornerstone. A war cry.
Beast Code isn't a normal company, and our people aren't here to achieve status quo. We come to work to win…together. To be the partner our customer's trust. To build technology that matters. To be part of something bigger than ourselves. The Beast Code logo isn't just a symbol. It's a mindset.
Yes, the work is hard. Yes, we move fast. Yes, the pace is intense. But we thrive in this environment because we have purpose. We have meaning. It's what drives us to keep pushing.
With everything going on, it's easy to forget how far we've come. We started with seven engineers around a foldout table with nothing but laptops, passion, and a problem to solve. Today, the table has grown to 240+ strong and counting. As we scale, never lose sight of the values that got us here. They are our compass. They are what make us Beast's.
Thanks for being part of the journey.
