General Manager's Guide to Ownership

Introduction

Ownership starts with a choice, the choice to take accountability for your actions while seeking some goal.

We use the word all the time: home ownership, car ownership, "You need to take ownership over your actions." We expect people to just do all the right things when we say "own it," but rarely does that actually occur. What does this actually look like in practice? During this year's General Manager Leadership Seminar, Ownership was my topic. Coming fresh off Resiliency, this was a natural step for my own growth. Ownership is a vital concept if you want to be successful in your pursuits. Ownership is:

  • planning for the future
  • taking the lead instead of being a bystander
  • having pride in the work you do
  • doing what you say you're going to do when you said you're going to do it
  • accepting responsibility when things don't go as planned
  • communicating early, often, and consistently

Individuals who embody true ownership understand the responsibility and the importance of their actions. They take "what is" and make it "what ought to be." They turn opportunities into well-oiled machines. Conversely, Ownership is not:

  • blaming others
  • excusing unproductivity
  • being inconsistent
  • being cynical
  • avoiding communication because things aren't right
  • the bystander effect

Those individuals with high ownership immediately stick out in a group. They're already stepping up to lead the team from their position. Pay attention to the bad signs of poor ownership as well, even the greatest can end up caught in these patterns. At Beast Code, we strive toward excellent ownership throughout the company. The ownership mentality is one that takes experience and maturity, and all our values speak directly to the cornerstones of Ownership:

  • Be Relentless
  • Less is More
  • Howdy Partner
  • It's not Impossible, It's Manageable

It's why our Beasts elevate the entire company with our actions, and it all starts with Ownership!
